Academic System & Start Dates

The academic system in Taiwan is calculated by academic year. Each academic year consists of two semesters, with 18 weeks of classes per semester.

  • Fall Semester:
    • Duration: August to January of the following year.
    • Starts: Mid-September.
    • Break: Followed by “Winter Vacation” (approx. one month).
  • Spring Semester:
    • Duration: February to July.
    • Starts: Mid-February.
    • Break: Followed by “Summer Vacation” (approx. three months).

Food and Clothing

  • On-Campus: Food Court (P Building, 1F & 2F), Red Master Bakery, Red Mill (L Building, B2), 7-11 Convenience Store (L Building, B2), Hung Ying/Hung Tea House (L Building, B1).
  • Off-Campus: Jack’s Bento, A-BAO (Breakfast), Hong Dou Bento.
  • Providence University Shopping District: Beishi East Road has many restaurants, fried chicken stands, and bubble tea shops. Providence Night Market is open on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
  • Tunghai Shopping District: Various snacks and brunch shops. Get off at the “Tunghai Villa” station.

Transportation

Q: I don’t have a vehicle in Taiwan. How do I get around?

  1. EasyCard / iPASS: Your Student ID card is integrated with EasyCard functions. It can be used for buses, MRT, trains, and renting YouBike.
  2. 10km Free Bus Ride: After binding your card, Taichung City offers a 🔗[10km free bus ride discount]. (The ride from Hungkuang University station to Maple Garden station is free).
  3. Express Buses: Numbers 300-308 are the most commonly used and run on the dedicated bus lane.
  4. Apps: Download “Taichung Bus Transit” or “Bus Tracker Taichung” for real-time bus schedules.
  5. High-Speed Rail (HSR): It takes about 30 minutes to reach HSR Taichung Station.

Special Reminder‼️

For your safety, we do not recommend students ride scooters or drive cars. Illegal driving will be penalized according to the “Act Governing the Punishment of Violation of Road Traffic Regulations.”

  • Riding a scooter without a license will result in a fine of NT$2,000 to NT$4,000 and an immediate ban from driving.

Dormitory Information

Q: Is housing provided for overseas students?

The university provides priority housing for the first year to overseas students.

  • Arrangement: For freshmen, the Office of the International Foundation Program will arrange housing once admission is confirmed. From the second year onwards, students must arrange their own housing.
  • Housing Deposit: All residents must pay a deposit to reserve their bed for the academic year and ensure the return of dormitory property in good condition. The deposit will be refunded to your registered bank or post office account after a successful move-out inspection.

Q: Are Chinese language courses provided?

Instruction is primarily in Chinese. Students are expected to have listening, speaking, reading, and writing proficiency (except for specific programs taught in English). If your Chinese level is insufficient for your coursework, you may attend enhancement courses at the Chinese Language Center.

  • Placement Test: A Chinese proficiency test is held during the first week of classes to determine your level.
  • Free Enhancement Classes: The university offers free Chinese enhancement classes to help students improve their language skills.
  • Certificate Submission: If you hold an official TOCFL certificate of Level B1 or higher, please submit it during registration.
