NATIONAL HEALTH INSURANCE (NHI)
1. Legal Regulations
According to the National Health Insurance Act, individuals holding a valid Alien Resident Certificate (ARC) and residing in Taiwan for six consecutive months are required to enroll in the National Health Insurance (NHI) program.
A six-month residence is defined as having continuously stayed in Taiwan for six months after obtaining the ARC, or having left Taiwan once for fewer than 30 days during this period, with the number of days spent abroad excluded, totaling six months of actual residence.
2. Insurance Premium Payment and Amount
In accordance with regulations, health insurance premiums for international students are included in the tuition and miscellaneous fees payment slip issued each semester and are to be paid at the time of registration.
The current NHI premium is NT$826 per month (based on the current rate set by the National Health Insurance Administration). For the first semester (September to February), the total premium is NT$4,956. For the second semester (March to August), the premium is also NT$4,956.
However, newly arrived international students must reside in Taiwan for six months after obtaining their ARC before becoming eligible for NHI enrollment.
To ensure students’ health and safety, before being eligible for NHI, they are required to enroll in a temporary medical insurance plan (provided by Cathay Life Insurance), which is arranged by the university. The premium for this temporary insurance is NT$500 per month.
