For international students, before entering Taiwan for study and obtaining an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC), you need to apply for a resident visa at the overseas missions (embassies or consulates) in your home country. Upon arrival in Taiwan with the residency visa, the Office of International Affairs (OIA) will assist in applying for the ARC.For students from Hong Kong and Macau, you need to apply for an Entry and Exit Permit Taiwan Republic of China to Taiwan. Upon arrival in Taiwan, the Office of International Affairs (OIA) will arrange a health examination for the ARC. Once completed, (OIA) will assist in applying for the ARC.

There are two semesters in an academic year, with 18 weeks of classes per semester.

Before first-year international students obtain National Health Insurance (NHI) eligibility, they need to enroll in the International Student Medical and Accident Insurance. The premium is NT$500 per month, and the insurance is purchased for a period of six months.

For overseas Chinese and Hong Kong/Macau students, the insurance for the first semester is subsidized by the Overseas Community Affairs Council, with a cost of NT$600 per semester. If they do not obtain NHI eligibility by the second semester, they need to enroll in the International Student Medical and Accident Insurance , and the insurance is purchased for a period of six months.

NHI stands for Taiwan’s National Health Insurance, which covers medical institutions across Taiwan that receive NHI subsidies. Students can seek medical care by presenting their NHI card. Apart from specific medication checks, students only need to pay registration fees and part of their medical expenses. NHI is mandatory; once eligible, individuals must enroll in the health insurance plan.

After entering Taiwan and obtaining an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC), you have resided in Taiwan continuously for six months. Alternatively, if you have exited Taiwan once for no more than 30 days during your residency, those days of absence are excluded from the calculation of the six-month residency period.※ Note: The calculation of the six-month residency period is as follows:

• For foreign students holding an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC), the period starts from the date of entry with the ARC.
• For students from Hong Kong and Macau, the period starts from the date of exchanging the entry and exit permit for residence.
• For dual citizens holding Taiwanese citizenship, the period starts from the date of establishing residency, with no restrictions on entry and exit.

The NHI fee for international students is $826 per month. Once eligible, this fee will be combined and collected with the miscellaneous fees every six months.
*For overseas Chinese and Hong Kong and Macau students who provide underprivileged certificate, the NHI fee is $413 per month.

Yes, they can. Overseas Chinese students, students from Hong Kong and Macau, and foreign students can legally work part-time in Taiwan after obtaining a work permit. Employers are required to enroll them in labor insurance according to the law (students are responsible for part of the premiums). During the semester, the maximum weekly working hours are 20 hours (there is no such restriction during winter and summer vacations).

Our school is located on Taiwan Boulevard, a major road in Taichung. There is a bus stop right at the school gate, making transportation convenient. Students studying within Taichung City can apply for a free bus ride for the first 10 kilometers.

The school primarily teaches in Mandarin Chinese. Students admitted to various departments are expected to have proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing Mandarin Chinese (except for certain departments that offer courses in English). If students find their Chinese language skills insufficient after enrollment to follow classes, they can participate in Mandarin Chinese enhancement courses arranged by the school’s Chinese Language Center.

Upon arriving in Taiwan for study purposes, it is advisable to purchase a 30-day cellphone SIM card directly at the airport, as airport plans are usually more favorable. Once you obtain your Alien Resident Certificate (ARC), you can apply for a formal telecommunications number at a telecom company.

The cost of living in Taichung, Taiwan, is relatively moderate and depends largely on  food, and personal spending habits. Generally, monthly living expenses could range from around NT$10,000 to NT$20,000. Additionally, consider expenses such as transportation, daily necessities, and entertainment. The actual amount will vary based on individual lifestyle choices.

Different countries/regions have different ways of marking years. “A.D.” (Anno Domini) is universally understood, including in Taiwan. However, Taiwan uses its own calendar system called the “Republic Era” (民國). If you need to express your birth date in the Republic Era, simply subtract 1911 from your A.D. birth year to get the Republic Era year. For example, someone born in 2004 would have been born in the 93rd year of the Republic Era. The month and day in the Republic Era are the same as in A.D., so no additional conversion is needed.

Taiwan’s academic calendar is structured by academic years, divided into two semesters: the first semester and the second semester. Between each semester, there are long breaks known as winter vacation and summer vacation. The first semester typically starts around mid-September and ends in mid-January of the following year, followed by winter vacation (approximately one month). After winter vacation, the second semester begins, usually starting in mid-February and ending in mid-June, followed by summer vacation (approximately three months). After summer vacation, the new academic year starts again around mid-September.

Taiwan has four distinct seasons: spring (March-May), summer (June-August), autumn (September-November), and winter (December-February). Generally, you should bring both short-sleeved and long-sleeved clothing. During winter, it’s advisable to have thick coats or down jackets for colder temperatures.
